Combining Roles: The Student + The Artist
For those of you who may not know, I started graduate school at Rutgers University back in January 2017. I am currently majoring in Communications and Media and I expect to complete my masters degree by 2019. I never thought I would go back to school after college but life is unpredictable like that. Never know where the journey may take you.
I have been an independent music artist for almost a decade. The challenges that I continuously face pursuing a career as a recording artist contribute to the jadedness I constantly feel. I decided I wanted to try my hand at something new. Something that provides a change of pace, a challenge.
I figured putting myself in a new educational environment would help me strengthen and explore my other skill sets, while also providing a setting for making new connections with people outside of the realm I am already familiar with. If the popular saying “It’s not what you know, its who you know” reigns true, I felt the urge to know more people in different fields who I can learn from and build with. What better place to do that than at a University? (and nothing bad can ever come from furthering your education)
In order to embrace this new journey I thought I had to let go of the rapper side of me. As the above video shows, I can take everything I am already good at and incorporate it within my new environment. I performed at an open mic event on campus a few months ago. For the first time, I felt comfortable bringing those worlds together. I felt confident embracing that I am both a student and a seasoned artist, at the same damn time!
